We’ve received increasing reports of illegal or dangerously ridden Electric Powered Vehicles (EPVs) in and around Broseley again. These include high-powered electric bikes and scooters that exceed legal limits and are being used on pavements and on public roads, posing serious risks to public safety. ⚠️ What’s the issue? Road-legal EPVs (such as e-bikes) must:- Have pedals.
- Not exceed 15.5 mph (25 km/h) under motor power.
- Use a motor rated no higher than 250 watts.
- Anything faster or more powerful is classed as a moped or motorcycle, requiring registration, insurance, and a valid licence.
- Many riders are unaware of these rules—or are deliberately ignoring them.
- Several near-misses have been reported, especially around the High Street, Wilkinson Avenue, Church Street and along Ironbridge Road.
- Some individuals are riding these vehicles on busy roads without helmets or protective gear, putting themselves at serious risk of injury in the event of a collision or fall.
🚔 Legal & Financial Consequences Using an illegal EPV can lead to serious penalties: Seizure of the vehicle by police.Points on your driving licence or disqualification.Fines for lack of insurance, registration, or MOT.Criminal charges if the vehicle is involved in dangerous or antisocial behaviour.Insurance hikes: Points on your licence can lead to significantly higher premiums, or even refusal of cover by some insurers.Parents may also be held responsible if underage riders are involved.Did you know? Underage riders: Even if you're not old enough to hold a licence, penalty points can still be added to your record. These will appear on your licence when you apply, potentially affecting your ability to pass your test and increasing future insurance costs. ✅ What can you do? If you witness dangerous or illegal use of EPVs, report it to West Mercia Police via 101 or online.Share CCTV or dashcam footage if available, this helps identify repeat offenders.Speak to young riders in your household about the legal and safety implications of using EPVs improperly, especially on public roads without protection.Let’s keep Broseley safe. We all want to enjoy our town without worrying about speeding vehicles on pavements or in parks. Please help spread awareness and encourage responsible riding. Together, we can make sure Broseley remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone. PCSO Scott
